How does it com pare with other American families? According to the latest U. S. Department of Agriculture figures, which were compiled in December, a husband and wife with two preschoolers spend SI 10.40 a week on a moderate-cost food plan. The same couple would spend an average of SI 35,60 on a liberal plan. On the thrifty plan, the same sire family spends S7230. Figures for couples with two children between the ages of six and 11 are: $82.80, thrifty plan; S132.60, moderate plan; and $159.70, liberal plan. Add a teenage girl to the family, and the food bill in creases $21.40 for the thrifty plan, $31.20 for the moderate plan and $37.60 for the liberal plan. Not surprisingly, the figures are even higher if the teenager is a boy. The USDA figures assume that food for all meals and snacks is purchased at the store and prepared at home. The figures only cover food, not items like pet food, soap, cigarettes, paper goods or al coholic beverages. Most Americans buy occasional snacks from vending machines, buy biscuits at a fast-food restaurant, order in pizza, have a beer and go out for Chinese food, so the actual amount spent on food is much higher. In actuality, the average American spends just 54 percent on food prepared at home, 39 percent on food prepared away from home and seven percent on alcoholic beverages.
